Tour Dupont ’95

Reaching the conclusion nearly everyone correctly jumped to a week earlier, Lance Armstrong won the 1995 Tour DuPont yesterday with a carefully executed ride over the 30-mile time trial that ended the 1,130-mile cycling event.

The 23-year-old Armstrong, who rides for Motorola, deposed Viatcheslav Ekimov, the 1994 Tour DuPont champion, who went into the time trial trailing Armstrong by 4 minutes, 5 seconds. In doing so, Armstrong, of Austin, Texas, became the second American to win America’s best-known multistage race, which began in 1989 as the Tour de Trump. Greg LeMond won in 1992.
